BBC: Finnish Iceye’s SAR radar satellite returns its first image

The picture depicts a region of Alaska incorporating Noatak National Preserve. The Finnish startup company Iceye is taking a radical new approach to satellite radar (Synthetic-Aperture Radar, SAR), shrinking the size of what have traditionally been big, power-hungry spacecraft into a volume similar to that of a suitcase. The firm plans to launch a large network of these platforms which will enable multiple radar images a day to be acquired over the same location on Earth – a service that has not previously been available.
