The Finnish space company ICEYE and the European launch service company Arianespace have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the aim of investigating the launches of ICEYE's satellites with the European Ariane 6 launch vehicle in the coming years.

The focus of the cooperation is particularly on European governmental, security and institutional space projects. According to the agreement, the parties will explore the possibilities of utilising Arianespace's launch services in future ICEYE satellite missions.

ICEYE has become one of Europe's most significant growth companies in the space sector. The company develops and operates Earth observation satellites based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), the data produced by which is used in defence, security, crisis management and environmental monitoring, among other things.

The company announces that it will increase its satellite production from the current approximately 50 satellites per year to 100 satellites per year during 2027. At the same time, the need for reliable and versatile launch solutions is increasing.

From a European perspective, the cooperation is linked to the broader goal of strengthening the continent's strategic autonomy and independent access to space. The new generation European heavy-lift launch vehicle, Ariane 6, has been developed to secure the ability of European institutional and commercial actors to access space with their own systems.

In its press release, ICEYE also emphasises that the satellite systems it supplies can be implemented without the technologies covered by the U.S. ITAR export restrictions. This has become a significant factor, especially in European security and defence projects.

No binding decisions have yet been made on possible launches, but the parties are exploring the practical implementation possibilities of cooperation in the coming years.

Comment by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

"The cooperation between ICEYE and Arianespace is an interesting example of how European space expertise, launch capability and satellite technology are increasingly interconnected. Europe's independent access to space and access to space services that are important for security, competitiveness and economic growth have become key strategic goals.

ICEYE's development shows that internationally competitive space companies are emerging in Finland. At the same time, the strengthening of European launch capacity and satellite production will support the growth of the entire space value chain and Europe's technological self-sufficiency."
