Finnish authors in ESA publications

Excel file content and organisational affiliation handling

1. File purpose

The Excel file contains all publications from 1983 onwards with Finnish authors (first or second authors). Each row corresponds to one post.

2. Columns in the file

The following information is stored for each publication:

  • BIBCODE
  • Authors
  • Year
  • Journal
  • Volume, Page
  • Title
  • URL, DOI
  • Affiliate (multiple columns)

3. Organisational affiliations

What does organisational affiliation mean?
Organisational affiliation is the author's connection to the organisation at the time of publication (e.g. university, department, research institute).

Principles

  • All organisational affiliations are kept exactly in their original form.
  • If multiple authors have an affiliation to the same organisation, the organisation may appear multiple times in the file.
  • Minor differences in addresses and names (e.g. institutional qualifiers, "currently at", "formerly associated with") are not combined or corrected, as they may contain relevant information.
  • If the author has organisational affiliations both in Finland and abroad, all links are listed, not just Finnish ones.
  • Organisational affiliations can tell about a researcher's career path or organisational changes.
  • Even small styling differences can be relevant in a scientific context.
  • The aim is to keep the data in the original format of the research publications, so that no information is lost or misinterpreted.

Conclusion

  • The file contains all publications that include Finnish authors, from 1983 to the end of 2023.
  • Full publication metadata and all organisational affiliations as published are included.
  • The data is not normalised, combined, or filtered to maintain the original accuracy.
  • The solution enables reliable further analysis of, for example, organisational changes, researcher mobility and international connections.
